There's nothing like GTA: Online, for better and for worse
The promise of Grand Theft Auto: Online is an intoxicating one. GTAV’s world remains one of, if not the most remarkable in gaming history, and the idea that you and a group of friends can team up and wreak havoc upon that world seems too good to be true. To some extent, it is too good to be true. GTAO suffers from a myriad of technical issues and limitations, including ridiculous loading times, crashes, game-breaking glitches, and terrible anti-cheat. It’s like a complicated, unwieldy machine with hundreds of unseen components. If it fails, your only two options are to start from scratch, or give up. But when it all comes together, when you finally find your friends after five minutes of loading screens and ten minutes of yelling at each other on Discord to “go here”, the experience is unparalleled. The first few hours we spent roaming the world were violent co-op magic, like a depraved, extravagant Scorcese montage with a body count that would turn eyes at the ICJ. We did missions, did drugs, blew things up, got haircuts, bought clothes, bought cars, stole cars, shot police, shot pedestrians, and of course, shot each other. Being homebound due to Covid, our at-first daily, then weekly GTA sessions kept us connected, the first time a game had done so since our short-lived Minecraft phase in March of last year. But yesterday, as we failed the same section of the Diamond Casino Heist for about the twentieth time, one of my friends broke the silence. “Is anyone having fun?” Several months ago, I posted a rant on this subreddit about the singleplayer, bemoaning its weak story, poor gunplay, unnoticeable progression, and surprisingly empty open-world. I stand by what I wrote, perhaps even more so now that I see how much more compelling GTAV could have been if it had included online’s heists, vehicles, and properties as DLC. That said, online is not without fault. While there’s a massive catalogue of things to buy, the grinding necessary to purchase these things is awful, making even Cookie Clicker feel productive. GamesRadar says the Heists, which themselves require expensive properties and a substantial initial investment to initiate, net you about 400k an hour, which isn’t all that much considering how much vehicles and properties cost. We realized early on that the disparity between GTAO’s prices and its payouts was a manufactured pain point, the remedy being the game’s overpriced Shark Cards. Rather than dig out our wallets, we abided by GTA’s longstanding moral tradition and hacked ourselves enough money to buy every car, every property, and every weapon in the game. But even without the grind to worry about, GTAO had no qualms with wasting our time. The loading screens are the most obvious example of this, but these are, I believe, unavoidable given the scope of what you’re loading into. Where it’s less forgivable is in the tedious minutiae and the absence of systems that should be present. The more we played, the more frustrated I became. Why can I only fast travel to my properties as a CEO? Why can’t I claim all destroyed vehicles at once? Why can’t I skip these stupidly long cutscenes? Why do I have to wait to spawn in a vehicle? In a way, it makes the same mistake as its singleplayer counterpart. Though it has incredible setpieces that you won’t find in any other game, the vast majority of your time is spent preparing for them. I don’t believe games should have infinite longevity, so I don’t fault GTAO for losing its sheen after eighty-some hours. Overall, I had a good time. Tearing through hordes of cops in a pink Insurgent. The terrific Pacific Standard Heist. Getting picked up by my friend in a disgusting anime car that he claimed wasn’t his. Being repeatedly stalked and kidnapped over the course of several weeks by a hacker named “JOE BIDEN” who’d drive me around the map at light speed and drop boats on my head as I’d try to flee. And above all, having the opportunity to hang out with my friends during a pandemic. These are all experiences I’ll remember. The hours I spent in loading screens, driving from one side of the map to the other for the hundredth time, and listening to Lester talk about skinny dipping? I’ll remember those too, though nowhere near as fondly.

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a comment in response to a question about ETFs. This question comes up very often; usually two or three times a week. Maybe more than that. Several people suggested that it be "pinned." I obviously cannot do that, however if a mod wants to pin this, feel free to do so. I did make a few modifications and additions to that comment and for those who haven't gone back to see the changes, I thought I'd post it again here. Hopefully, this helps people who are interested in an investing approach that is either made up of ETFs or that includes ETFs as a part of their portfolio. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________ QQQ - This one uses the NASDAQ 100 as its benchmark. Obviously it's an Indexed, non-managed ETF. XTF used to rate this one as a perfect 10.0 out of 10 rating, but recently dropped it to 9.9 out of 10. It has one of the highest rates of return over the past 10 years of any ETF. It does tend to be tech-heavy, especially with the FAANG +M stocks. (Facebook, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google and Microsoft). Other top holdings include TSLA, NVDA and ADBE. (The rating dropped recently when the portfolio of the NASDAQ 100 was re-balanced). VOO/SPY - VOO and SPY are non-managed funds indexed to the S&P 500 Index. These funds are very popular on this subreddit, for good reason. They are well diversified, broad market funds investing in mostly US stocks. XTF rates these funds at 9.6 out of 10 because their return on investment over the long term is somewhat tempered by some of the blue chip stocks in the funds. But those stocks also help reduce volatility relative to some other ETFs. These are solid investments, but keep in mind that in the top 10 holdings there will be a lot of crossover between these funds and other broad market funds that hold US stocks like QQQ, VTI, VGT, VOOG and SPYG. There are differences, of course, as well, but you always want to know where those duplications exist. IWF - This is a Russell 1000 Growth fund. It is one of my favorites that doesn't get talked about much. It does have a lot of crossover with the other funds mentioned above, but the mix is slightly different. Other funds that use the Russell 1000 Growth Index include RWGV and VONG. I would describe this fund as more aggressive than VOO/SPY, less volatile than QQQ. VONE and IWB use the Russell 1000 Index as their benchmark. SPYG and VOOG use the S&P 500 Growth Index for their benchmark and would be similar (but not identical) to IWF, VONG and RWGV. IWM - for someone looking to diversify a little bit, this is a great fund to look into. This fund is a non-managed, indexed fund that uses the Russell 2000 index as its benchmark. The big difference between the Russell 2000 index and many of the the other indexes is that the Russell 2000 index looks at small and mid-cap companies, rather than large-cap companies. Thus, there is zero crossover between this one and the funds mentioned above. While this fund will move up and down with the market, it is often less volatile than the market overall. If you look at the charts, this fund has under-performed some of the other funds over the past few months while the market has been very volatile in an upward direction, but in a crash, this fund would probably outperform the rest of the market. It has a 9.0/10 XTF rating. VXUS - Vanguard Total International Index Fund ETF - top holdings include BABA, Tencent, Samsung, Taiwan Semiconductors, Novartis, Toyota. This is a broad market fund investing only in companies overseas. I'm not generally bullish on foreign markets, but this one is a very solid ETF with some companies that are likely to do extremely well for the foreseeable future. XTF rates this one a perfect 10.0 out of 10. EEM - iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF - This one is going to have a lot of crossover with VXUS. It is an Emerging Markets ETF with a lot of focus on China. It includes Alibaba, Tencent, JD.com, along with companies like Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductors. This one should be a solid performer as long as our trade relations with China remain normal. EFA - This is another international ETF, but here the focus is mainly on more established companies in Europe and Japan. This is a Large Cap ETF that includes companies like Nestle SA, Roche, Toyota, Novartis and AstraZeneca. Sector fund ETFs: ICLN/TAN/FAN - These funds are clean/renewable energy ETFs. ICLN is more broad while TAN focuses more specifically on solar energy and FAN specifically on wind generated energy. I think renewable energy companies are the future. There is no crossover in the top holdings of this fund with the top holdings of QQQ and most of the other broad market funds. Also, these are global, not just US based companies. QCLN and PBW are also renewable energy funds, but they also contain a lot of TSLA, NIO and W.K. H.S. in their top holdings making them "electric vehicle" funds, as well. No problem if you want to add that, but you'll find a lot of Tesla in some of the funds mentioned above. ARK group of funds: ARKG, ARKF, ARKK ARKW, ARKQ, PRNT and IZRL. These are managed funds investing in companies that invest in disruptive companies in their respective industries. Most posters on this subreddit are bullish on these funds. They are aggressive growth ETFs, but should be considered somewhat risky and volatile.
ARKG - Genomic Revolution
ARKF - Fintech
ARKK - Disruptive Companies (broader market)
ARKW - Internet/computetechnology (Telsa is a top holding)
ARKQ - Robotics and artificial intelligence
PRNT - 3D printing technology
IZRL - disruptive companies based in Israel
XL series of funds. Similar to the ARK series, these tend to be more aggressive growth funds, however these are passively managed indexed funds with various benchmarks that usually are overloaded in the better companies within a sector:
XLV - Health Care
XLK - Technology
XLY - Consumer Discretionary
XLF - Financial
XLU - Utilities
XLE - Energy
XLB - Materials
XLC - Communications
XLG - S&P Top 50
XLI - Industrial
XLP - Consumer Staples
XLRE - Real Estate
CLOUD COMPUTING:WCLD, SKYY, CLOU, BUG and XIKT. Of these WCLD has the best 52 week performance. Top holdings in WCLD include ZM, PLAN, CRM, CRWD, ZEN, WDAY, TENB, PCTY, DDOG, BL. Many of these are likely to also appear in QQQ, however, they would be in very small percentages as the Cap on these companies is much smaller. I do own shares in several, but not all of the funds listed above, including QQQ, IWF, some ARK funds, ICLN, VXUS, etc. __________________________________________________________________ Edit: In one of my previous edits, I accidentally erased a bunch of the sector funds. Please feel free to comment with your favorite sector funds and let me know if I forgot to add back some that I had before.
Over 90hrs in. Some opinions. And recommendations. TLDR, its worth playing and its got a lot of potential.
Is it worth the money?. That's subjective. Is there €69.99 worth of gameplay, fun and hijinks?. Yes there is. Its not what many believed it would be. But i came in to this with zero expectations and only seeing the reveal trailer all that time back. Every games marketing PR goes into overdrive these days and every year the PR cycle gets a little worse. And the userbases expectations become just as inflated as the pre-release gameplay claims. Its a vicious cycle. The city is a joy to explore. Its like a open world mirrors edge for climbing and finding unique ways into objectives or just to explore. There are definite optimizations that need to be implemented as some parts of town are just FPS killer regardless of your system. You can see even coming in relatively expectation free that they where striving to hit some high notes in gameplay and character development. It falls short in many areas.
Story,
Honestly i am not that far into the main story line. I wanted to save it and do the side stuff. Which has been fun, Some gigs are better than others. And its a worthwhile time sink in my opinion. But speaking only of Act 1. Please restore the obviously deleted content here. That was too quick and a waste of potential. You cannot expect us to be emotionally invested when things are moving so quick. Respect the characters and story you are trying to tell.
Pedestrian AI
So so dumb. Great filler for busy streets but they really do not have any random goals or interactions. You can scan them down. But to this day i have never had one come up as wanted or one decide to get angry and try to fight me.
Police AI
A lot has been said on this topic. I won't add much. Only that the police should NOT shoot on sight or become angered by passing them. Thats stupid. They do not even react to dropping a dead body in front of them or robbing a car. They only hate being stared at. There is a sort of bounty system for enemies to see what they are worth and their threat level. We should also have this as the player. We should be (Through our actions) attaining a bounty on our heads. That increases based on our actions. And wither a fixer or the ncpd should be putting hits out on us. To keep us on edge in nightcity and have us watching over our shoulders. It would be a great way to have unique random encounters with mercs. We should have had more elite units at high levels of NCPD alert. They tend to show them hanging around or in cutscenes as part of side gigs but rarely deployed on the street against you.
General enemy AI.
They are not smart, they will usually only be a threat from power snipers that you do not see immediately. Its not balanced at all. But it is chaotic and fun. Unlike most open world Action RPG's i found myself doing all the side gigs and the NCPD callouts and whatever randomness i stumbled on. -Gangs. The gangs are underwhelming and not threatening. We should see more random gang activity in the city like stalls, shops and resturaunts being held up. Or procedurally generated gang fights. We should have a affiliation rank for each gang that is constantly in flux dependant on the services we provide for a gang and a negative impact depending on the services we render to another gang. There should be gang specific rewards for helping them. And something of a territory system. It feels weird not to have that in this game.
Bars, Casinos, clubs.
You can do better than this. The atmosphere is there but the functionality is not. We should be able to have some minigames. Cards, slots, or maybe even some BD style puzzle games with rewards at various tiers. There is a lot of room to expand on this.
Driving.
This should have been a skill tree. That was a wasted opportunity and the lack of customisation for any car is a damn shame. These cars are beautiful and we should have been able to make them our own on some level.
Businesses.
We are supposed to want to become legends. Build a name and be remembered. We should have been able to rise to the point of being a fixer ourselves. Having information drop to us directly either via hints in the world or by talking to characters and unlocking missions that raised our Fixer rep and the ability to open an office that hosts our fixer service. Something like that. And seriously where are the dang flying cars, even if we cannot fly them there should be a taxi service we can avail of on the fly for a nice view of the city. And the police should use them more. Or hell even their own damn cars to chase us. Seriously. Fix the police.
Weapons.
They are good, they are fun, crafting is interesting. But really we should have had more attachments than scopes and silencers. Different mag types, round types. Just to invest you more in crafting and developing various weapon skills.
Swimming.
Yeah its a city, this is low priority but still. Fix the water please. If you throw a body in, it acts like there is no water there at all. No spash, nothing dynamic about it. You would expect at least SOME boats on the rivers which would have added a lot to the general atmosphere.
Consumables
Seriously, that is a lot of item variation with little to no effect difference between them. Kind of a shame given your history in the Witcher series and varied unique items and consumables.
Gear
The clothes items are mostly, well.... not good from an aesthetic POV. You will have some funky funky characters walking around before you get something that makes you feel badass. Crafting schematics are a pain to collect. Genuinely few and far between. And the shops will restock ones you already have and will not tell you that you own them already. Which is frustrating.
Cyber skills/hacking
Really underrealized. We should have had far more control over the city and its assets via hacking. Maybe they did not want to be criticised for copying watchdogs or something but honestly. Hacking cars to force them to move or crash. Changing signal lights, hacking pedestrian implants to make them act out as a distraction. Or hacking a enemy to make them go berserk on their own guys. Enemies should have visible grenades on their person that we can hack to set off while its attached to them. Or hack a enemy mech robot to fight for us. Or hack a turret to fight for us for a limited time and then overload. There is so much room to expand and improve this game. But it is a joy to play as is, you just see where they started to push certain areas and then moved on. Never reaching something truly special. It is in my eyes worth the money. There is plenty of content to chew on and out of my circles everyone's playstyle is different and builds are unique from one another. So it has enough RPG elements to tweak and play with. I do hope they keep developing updating and fixing the title in the coming months. There is a real diamond here just waiting to be uncovered. They need to in order to have a hope of selling Cyberpunk 2078.

I figured this was the better place to post a semi-review of the game, y'all seem more chill. I just finished the game, played as a Corpo, got the secret ending where I stormed the HQ with Johnny, and got The Sun ending, where you straight up rob a space casino. I'll put the TL;DR here, for those of you who're just scrolling: the game is a masterpiece. One of the best I've played in years. CD tried to do a lot here, more than the Witcher, and while not everything stuck the landing, the hate this game is getting is ludicrously over the top. I don't mean to diss, but games like Fallout 76 and Anthem didn't get this kind of shit, and they deserved it 10X more in my opinion. Hey, at least this game doesn't have any damn time savers or Verizon themed pre order outfits. I'm gonna get into my main points now, starting with the positives:
The soundtrack. It's amazing, from the theme at the main menu to the combat music. the radio stations are all Preem too. There's a little of everything.
The voice acting is really solid, I played a male V and he really sounded like Jon Bernthal and Frank Grillo mixed together. Keanu is of course Keanu. Something I also really enjoyed and I hope more games adopt, which I haven't seen mentioned, is people speak different languages. Like not every character speaks perfect English. There are Russians, Japanese, and Spanish gangs and they all speak their respective languages. I dug that, and it's easily explained cause you have translator tech.
Similarly to something like Mafia 3, the face models are really out of this world. Character creation is pretty extensive too, I liked being able to give my V crossbones for eyes.
Night City itself is drop dead gorgeous at times. When you're driving around North Oak, that long highway just outside town, the city is like something out of Blade Runner.
Each district feels really unique, Pacifica and Heywood being favorites of mine. All the fixers have their own shtick, and the gangs are nice and varied. Padre and the Voodoo Boys are great.
The combat is solid, and there are a lot of options for different play styles. I kind of opted for a jack of all trades type build, and had a lot of fun. Granted, there's a lot more systems then there need to be, but I'll get to that later.
The story itself is gripping, I never lost interest, even when I was off doing side quests I was still thinking about a conversation I'd had with Johnny. Speaking of which--
Johnny. I've seen this before, with Handsome Jack in Tales From the Borderlands and the Joker in Arkham Knight, but Cyberpunk really takes a new spin on it. Johnny doesn't just spout off random bullshit all the time--though he does sometimes and it's often great stuff, like him talking about his 'impressive cock'--but he does actively challenge you and get into real discussions with you. He's got a lot of layers that are fun to peel back, and he's a genuinely tragic character. Johnny is written beautifully.
The rest of the cast is superb as well. Goro, who really broke my heart when in the ending phone calls he told me to 'Rot in Hell', even though I deserved it. But Julie, River, the guy that wants you to nail him to a cross--they all find a way to stand out.
The mission design too I enjoyed, especially in the side gigs. You could be covertly infiltrating a penthouse looking for a priceless guitar one minute, to shooting up an underground nightclub the next. There's the cyber-psychos and all those NCPD crimes, and holy shit, reading those shards was straight up heartbreaking at times. There's story packed in everywhere of this game.
But I've blown the game enough now, time for some constructive criticism.
Obviously, performance wise I think we're still a few patches away from being smooth sailing. I've had a few crashes, but mostly I have issues with my controls just freezing up, like not being able to jump or shoot while aiming.
There's a disparity in the economy I find, and I haven't seen this mentioned yet, though I could be wrong. The rewards for certain quests, like the amount of credits you earn can be really low. The amount of EXP too. I think these need to be doubled at least, because 1,300 credits for a gig that I was told was 'Very Hard', doesn't check out. It's something to give thought to at least, because right now, unless you abuse the money cheat, getting cash early on can be a little tedious. There could be reward scaling too, based on your level or the area you're in.
Combat wise, there are a lot of options, which is good, but at the end of the day blasting people with a revolver that does 1,200 damage is easiest. Melee weapons are fun, as are your cyber hacks, I just feel as though there needs to be more incentive to use them.
That brings me to the skill trees. The reason I stuck with handguns is because trying to level up all those individual skills at the same time became almost impossible. Especially certain ones like athletics and engineering. I think a good change here could be either an increase into how much EXP you get form doing certain actions, a reduction in how much EXP you need, or both. Crafting needs this especially when making a legendary item only nets 300 EXP and you need 55,000 to level up.
With regards to the life paths, outside of making the intros a little longer, I'd say a more meaningful quest later on would be a nice reward. Using Corpo as an example, the opening ends before you really have a chance to do anything. I think being able to actually complete the hit, or try to and botch the job, would set things up nicely. Also, actually being able to go back and stick it to Jenkins, instead of dealing with that guy who has one conversation with you. I don't need a grand overhaul, just really those two things would do it for me.
So that's really it, I mean I can talk about this game for hours but I know no one has that kind of time. To really wrap up, the response to this game has just really left me speechless. CD isn't perfect, we learned that, but they didn't burn down an orphanage for the blind. When you have companies like Konami that charge you for save slots, and EA--nothing needs to be said about them--it's worth looking at all they get right here. Visuals can be fixed, as can performance issues. I'm playing on an Xbox One S and I think I've got my $60 worth and more. At the end of the day, if your core game isn't good, then all the patches in the world can't fix that. Here, the core story and game is fantastic, so in lets say a month, I'll be ready for a second play-through no doubt. The hate train is already starting to loose steam, which means hopefully more people will get to experience Night City and all it has to offer. I appreciate anyone who took the time to read through all my rambling. Keep fighting, Samurais, city won't burn itself!
Rockstar and Take2: Here's some reasons you missed out on immense amounts of money by not architecting dedicated servers into your multiplayer setup
To bring everyone up to speed on network topology in games: GTA Online uses what's called a peer-to-peer mesh network setup. This means that every PC/console on a connected session is talking to every other PC/console in that session. The preferred alternative for most multiplayer games is sever-client, where in every PC/console is talking with a single server. With p2p mesh, this means that everyone shares authority. What this translates to is that a server is not the single authority checking for malicious activity, much of which anyone who has played GTA Online for is familiar with. This also means that anyone with the know-how can figure out what IP every other person is connecting from. This can lead to other malicious activity outside of the game. But standing up dedicated servers costs money. Why not avoid that? There are plenty of cases to be made where peer-to-peer connectivity makes sense, especially from a cost-savings perspective. But in some cases, like GTA Online, the benefits/gains from using a server-client setup far outweigh the costs. So, in no particular order:
What Dedicated Servers Would Have Brought to RS/T2:
More purchases of cash in the Social store. We'll start with the obvious here. When someone can get into a game and ask about [redacted method of obtaining money] and get a response 50% of the time, it's an obvious miss on being able to purchase prepaid in-game credit cards from the store. There's no incentive. And if they don't want to ask someone to do it, they can do it themselves. Higher volume of Twitch streamers. It seems easily correlated, but Twitch's research shows that livestreaming leads to better game sales. The reason this isn't streamed as broadly is because not everyone can get enough reliable people for a heist. Private sessions can be invaded by the same people who also [redacted method of obtaining money]. This is regardless of the privacy of a lobby, because those same people can find a unique identifier on the public Rockstar social site and join it, regardless of whether or not they're a friend or a crew member-- or simply not invited. What this translates to are people who have such a low bar to pass to join a streamer's game and hold the experience hostage, crash the session or do any other number of malicious things. They can also impersonate people and send messages as them. So this further leads to things like not being able to do: Twitch Rivals streams between competing streamer teams. Imagine this: the game is pretty solidly protected from people who [redacted method of obtaining money] and those incidents they generate are rare, and when they do pop up, they're punished. So, streaming this game is far more viable. Competitive crews start forming, and Rockstar promotes an event with streamers where they're able to host lobbies and get 24, 36 or even 48 streamers in one session running 12 different crews for things like:
Business goods battles
Arena wars
Deathmatches
Races
And so on and so forth. But because items have to be obtained through legitimate game mechanics, it also implements a grind. Maybe these groups/crews have been running for a while. But then you'd also be able to do: Streamer Drops through Connected Accounts We've seen other games do this, where viewers can get "drops" into their game by watching the streamer play it. These drops could have been literally anything that was on the Diamond Casino Wheel of Fortune. It could have even been a bonus spin at the wheel, to encourage getting the player in the game. The Long-Term, Sharded MMO Experience This translates to cash because people would be continually playing the game, which means more people paying for in-game cash and general popularity because more people would be streaming it, but this is the bigger buyback to the player, too. Imagine a crew that worked hard at completing a certain set of heists on hard difficulty, no deaths, consecutive. Four people who are streaming their attempt like people do for raid bosses. And their reward was a unique yacht only available for them. A ranked arena war system that awarded players who got 100 wins with a unique vehicle or livery. The system could have been adjusted to make some things a grind. Making that money with friends, and then knowing that if someone had a high-end apartment, much less a casino penthouse, that they earned it through blood, sweat and hard work. Powerful crews that were running around and happen to land on the same lobby and an all-out war with tactics, reinforcements and a consideration of cash drain to get the win in Los Santos. These are the things that Rockstar and Take2 missed out on by not having dedicated servers with protections against [redacted method of obtaining money]. They were on the verge of greatness. They were this close. And I know that a lot of this translates over for Red Dead Online, too.
Is It Too Late to Do All of This?
No, I don't think so. If RockstaTake2 were to seek redemption from this, here's what they'd have to do: Implement a dedicated server gamemode, and only allow characters created for this game mode specifically. If people want to continue messing around in peer-to-peer sessions, maybe they allow that for a time before slowly forcing people over (because it's all about that money, right?). But create a new character (or duplicate the looks of one), and make it only available for play on controlled, dedicated servers. You can even put Ye Olde GTA 5 spin on it and have Lester come in and say, "Yeah, I know the simulation was pretty fucked, right? It got hacked by kids on Christmas break. But anyway, now that you know what's possible out there in this stupid, god-forsaken world, well... uh, perhaps it's time we started making some money. And you remember Fleeca, right?" Then people start off fresh, and work on earning things through the grind. I promise you, that'll net you some untold money and viewership. And I have faith enough that even if you made a very solid push into authoritative client-host conversion from peer-to-peer mesh, allowing the authoritative client-host to be controlled by Rockstar servers, you'd get something out of it. And I will put a disclaimer on here: I don't know if the game engine is so archaic that it wouldn't allow for this kind of change. And if that is indeed the case, then the only thing that I can say is you missed out on all of the above by choosing to design what you did, because it is a proprietary engine. But if you can, imaginary Rockstar or Take2 directory reading this, please, I implore you. Push for the change. This has been one of the best social games for me during lockdown, and I can't overstate how much everyone will benefit from this. Sincerely, ~The Village Idiot
My take on Cyberpunk 2077. I’m playing on a decently powerful PC ( i7 7700, GTX 1070 Ti, 1TB SSD, 32GB DDR4 RAM), and I only started after the game was patched to v1.04. Female V, Street Kid background, on Hard difficulty. I'm not particularly far into the game, as I've been busy with work and also just exploring. Maybe 25% or so done. I’ve patched the PC version to 1.05. Glitches have been minor, non-gamebreaking graphical issues, mostly things just looking weird. Not common, and more amusing than distracting / infuriating. No crashes, one T-pose, some dumb A.I. stuf. I had one issue where Johnny kept repeating some line about a casino, but I found fast-traveling back to the casino lets the game flag the dialogue as complete and it goes away. I also used to play the tabletop Cyberpunk 2020 tabletop RPG, so I’m quite familiar with the setting and the changes. Things to know: * Despite being based on a popular RPG, it’s more like Mass Effect or the Witcher III vs. Fallout or Skyrim. Your path is just more about if you’re going to respond as a noble anti-hero or an obnoxious dickhead. It’s more Paragon / Renegade responses to the same choice vs. making massive, world-changing decisions. Also, unless this happens later in the game, your background doesn't make a massive difference in the game. Going Nomad or Corpo or Streetkid just seems to change the prologue, give you a few unique dialogue options, and probably a few sidequests. Sort of like the FemShep background in Mass Effect. I was hoping it would be more like the original RPG, where a Corpo could request corporate assets, the Nomad could call in their family convoy, etc. * The game earns its M-rating. Profanity, violence, gore, and heavily sexualized in-world advertisements that are HEAVILY focused on conventional heterosexual male gaze (Although someone pointed out to me that the Watson Whore ads actually feature a feminine male individual in thigh-high boots, and not a woman as I originally thought). I get it. It’s a dystopia where corporations exploit anything and everyone for profit, but sheesh. It’s 2077. Let’s extrapolate out how 57 years of progress would affect gender and sexuality and really blur the lines. I doubt a transwoman model would be shocking in 2077, even one that is visibly well hung. You’d think 2077 would have cyborg models that resemble something out of the grotesque Maelstrom transhumanist gangers. I mean, I like porn, and seeing tits and dicks isn’t going to offend me. It’s just so widespread that it loses any shock or titillation value, and it’s too close to actual “sexy” ads that it isn’t an effective satire or parody of hyper-sexualized marketing. I did smirk at going into a Night City sex shop and seeing a display of a female mannequin pegging a male mannequin, so it’s not like I’m completely above cheap titillation. Pros: · Graphics are absolutely gorgeous · Sound is great, as well as voice-acting. A certain mainstream actor sounds a bit flat, which isn’t uncommon for traditional actors doing voicework. · World-building and storyline is engrossing. · Some of the in-game humor is genuinely funny. Some of the relationships with your NPCs is genuinely touching. · When the game’s missions really embrace the source material, it’s really cool. Like rescuing a rich woman from bio-scavengers stripping her for her high-end cybernetic parts like a Ferrari in a chop shop, and having to un-jam the interference chip that is keeping her internal alarm system from alerting a heavily armed Trauma Team, or corralling rogue A.I. taxi cabs. · Music is nice and setting appropriate. The licensed music on the radios is great. · Weapons are neat and have some cool sci-fi features not found in modern shooters. Armor is available in everything from bulky military vests to clubkid wear. · Braindancing is genuinely cool. - Some fanservice for Cyberpunk 2020 players, such as Jack Entropy, Morgan Blackhand, Rogue and Johnny Silverhand. There's even a flashback to the distant past of 2023. - Once you get the rhythm down with weapons, mods, cybernetics, and combining hacking, tech, and firepower and you start ripping through entire gangs like a true street samurai, it is a fucking rush. Scouting, marking targets, disabling security cameras, then stunning the Alpha Dawg with a hack of his cyberware or nervous system, wounding them all with a frag grenade, charging in with a poly-diamond-carbide katana, then retreating to patch yourself up and popping a few guys through cover with a Tech Rifle before finishing off the last guys with a Smart Shotgun feels AMAZING. Cons: · Driving is a bit wonky at first, due to the fact you’re using the A/D keys for left/right, vs. an analog control stick. Seems easier on a motorcycle. · Combat is a bit annoying at the beginning, as enemies are Borderlands-style bullet-sponges. The original RPG’s Friday Night Firefight combat system emphasized that people don’t magically become more resistant to bullets with experience (outside of armor or implants), and a single, well-placed bullet can drop a rookie Netrunner just as easily as a veteran Solo. · The breaching mini-game is rather repetitive. I finally figured out the Vertical-Horizontal-Vertical pattern. · Some of the in-game tutorials or level requirements are unclear or misleading. Like how to disrupt an enemy Netrunner trying to overheat your cybernetics, or what the actual patterns are for the hacking mini-game, although you should have enough time to trial & error a solution. It’s far too easy to stumble into a random encounter or sidequest that you are massively underpowered for (such as the bare-knuckle brawling). It’s even weirder since Witcher 3 did an excellent job of preventing this. TIPS: · Upgrade your Cyberdeck as soon as possible, preferably with a Blue or Purple Grade one. This really ups your hacking prowess. · Sell anything white, and break down anything Green or above. - There's an Intelligence perk that highlights hostile Netrunners in Amber instead of Red like every other enemy mook. Very, very handy. - Some of the Power sniper rifles will still penetrate cover, even if they're not a Tech rifle. The slow rate-of-fire, but heavy single shot SPT32 will punch through cover. Very handy for taking out mooks you've marked. There's a Blue crafting recipe, and it's still pretty devastating. · Mix up your skills. You can’t raise a sub-skill above an attribute, so if you have Reflexes at 7, and Handguns at 7, using a pistol won’t raise your handgun skill to 8 until you boost Reflexes to 8. So switch to a shotgun or melee weapon. · It doesn’t seem like your character is affected by Cyberpsychosis. In the original RPG, to prevent everyone from going to a full Robocop / Adam Smasher total body conversion, the more hardware you added, the more humanity you lost. Go nuts at the Ripperdoc! · Melee weapons are surprisingly effective in the 2070s. I avoided them, then tried them out of curiosity when I got an Iconic katana. I didn’t expect to run through a squad of Maelstrom creeps like a Cuisinart with severed limbs flying. MILD SPOILER: There’s a Maelstrom cyborg who is one of the Cyber-Psychos. She’ll close in and slice you to ribbons if you try to shoot her. Duel her, and parry her Mantis blades. · Don’t forget your grenades! Using grenades helps boost your Engineering skils. · If you get too many health kits or grenades, you can break them down. · After hacking a security camera, you can manually reach up to it and permanently switch it off. This prevents it from being turned back on, AND boosts your Engineering skills. · Hiding bodies in dumpsters, crates, car trunks gives you Stealth XP. · I’m still searching for a good way to boost Athletics besides running and climbing everywhere. I believe parrying melee attacks with a katana boosts this. · You can drag someone to a body dump site with your initial chokehold, then kill them and stash their body with one button press once you’ve dragged them to a body dump site.
In this post I will be outlining all the aspects of the game ASIDE from the bugs that contribute to the communities disappointment in this 'action-adventure' (not RPG apparently) game, ie anything that the managers and planners had long term decisions about. This is very long and is compiled from posts within the community on reddit and in news, CDPR public statements and my opinion. I would like to start with the opening statement that I believe the bugs will be fixed, I accept the performance issues are a major problem and were poorly handled by CDPR. This is indicative of very poor management of expectations and execution of what must have been a 'plan'. Now I will proceed with my perceived the gameplay issues / disappointments.
Story and immersion - story itself is very good, however they have created a beautiful world with no life, as people have seen when comparing the AI and NPC's to RDR2 and the immersion into the life of your character, it is jarring how bad the NPC's can be in Cyberpunk, the same people sat in the same place all the time saying the same things. We know the technology and ability exists, no reason this wasn't possible.
Fighting mechanics, styles and abilities - comparing them to any of the other games in the market inc. Witcher I was underwhelmed. Skill trees add so little it doesn't feel like you can do interesting and impactful specs (I was focussing pistol dmg and multipliers with loads of points and just can't tell the difference when fighting). Not to mention other aspects like fun tools, different fighting combos for melee weapons, some sort of equivalent of poisons on your sword in Witcher and all the different spells used for diff opponents and scenarios and actually having to think like we do in similarly made games. Cyberpunk is point and shoot, oh and this bullet can go round things, and this bullet is bouncy. Ok GREAT let me continue dribbling onto my controller as I click that button. Not to mention the melee combat is a joke, hitting enemies with gun butt does next to nothing and hardly stuns enemies, the blades and bludgeons have few animations and are clunky, there is no fluidity to the combat, no counters or combos which just makes it stale and repetitive - disappointing considering how fun the Witcher combat was.
RPG mechanics and world detail - we have already been over the NPC's, now I will go over the distinct lack of things to do in the city and what features I feel they have completely overlooked in a show of gross mismanagement. Take back to GTA San Andreas, Assassins Creed and Skyrim and you have tonnes more things to do in the world. It just feels so empty. No real character and car customisation and the stress on stats ultimately gives you no choice in making your character look how you want - not that you ever see him. All I do is drink and fuck a few prostitutes, honestly it's a fucking deplorable decision to attract dirty little teenagers. Feel like you have debased yourselves with the lack of tact and imagination here. For me it's easy to imagine what could be easy to include and has been in other games, why not in Cyberpunk? Perhaps multiple food vendors, barber / tattoo parlour, gym or a cyberware training centre, casino and gambling tables, mini card / board games, sports games, chop shops, black market, guilds and associated missions, bank and shop robbing, pickpocketing, treasure hunts, more puzzles, points of interest and high viewpoints, to name a few ideas - all of them previously done.
Character and Vehicle controls - combat mechanics and stealth are clunky unintuitive and often simply don't work. Stealth is too difficult and I don't feel there is a difference with these mechanics on other difficulty settings (but can't confirm this now), the execution system is awful I usually end up spotted while I'm holding on to an enemy - just let me dispose of him and carry away with ease. The hacking in the game is no fun, you could make this so entertaining and funny) not much more to say here. Driving is ok but could be improved, drifting or cornering doesn't feel right. The HUD is a mess and the mini-map is ridiculous while driving, you can never see the corners coming so you just end up crashing every time there is a turn or you have to drive slowly all the time.
The dream - the promise and idea this would truly contend with the top games out there and change the face of gaming, this was certainly the idea sold to me and with the time involved in development and the communications we received I was expecting something truly innovative. I would like to say that I enjoy this game and aside from bugs on release it's worth the money for me - but this is not the point I'm making. We all wanted this to be as good as it could be and it feels like it's lacking. I cannot for the life of me think of anything really new / innovative in this game; yes a brilliant story, yes the possibility of incredible graphics with a top end PC, however, the amount of stress put on lip syncing technology, making screenshots, ray tracing, in depth stories and extra 'out-game' content like merch and comic stories just seems ridiculous when they have such better things to improve.
Its like serving a terrible dinner on a beautiful ornate plate, what's the point if it tastes bad?
An Overly Long Fanmade Ace Attorney 7: Echoes of Discord Pitch: Episode 1. Possible spoilers for all main games (AA1-6)
Hey, everyone! Over the past few weeks, I've been making up a plotline that I think would fit for the inevitable Ace Attorney 7, whenever it releases. As of right now, I only have Episode 1 fully plotted out, but I'll put some of my ideas for the other cases at the end of the post as an author's note, of sorts. Considering how much I wrote for the tutorial case alone, I don't know if I'll ever continue this project, because Case 2, a case with 2 investigations and 2 trials, would basically be 4 times the length of this case, and I don't know if I have the talent to write a compelling mystery that would do a case of that length justice. The overall concept of the game would be to focus mainly on Athena and Phoenix, and it would involve Phoenix attempting to institute the Jurist System while Athena would have to deal with the Phantom's organization and her past at the Cosmos Space Center and in university. The lawyer-case distribution would be as follows: Phoenix gets 7-1 (tutorial) and 7-4 (filler), Athena would get 7-2, 7-3, and 7-5, which would all be plot relevant, and Apollo would get a Rise from the Ashes style case in Khura'in, which would be unlocked after completing the game instead of being offered as a DLC case. As this is my ideal version of Ace Attorney 7, I've taken some liberties that the writers at Capcom might not do, as I've taken the Payne brothers out of the main story entirely, but they'll still be in the game in the Phoenix Wright: Asinine Attorney case, which is unlocked after beating the tutorial case. Also, a beloved character from the original trilogy is the victim of the first case of the game, which might be controversial. But I think that the story will be overall more compelling with the changes that I've made, so without further ado, here's the first episode of Ace Attorney: Echoes of Discord! ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Episode 1: Turnabout Terror Date: Late March 2029 Location: Skye Detective Agency Defendant: Ema Skye Attorney: Phoenix Wright Co-Counsel: Athena Cykes Synopsis: Nine months have passed since the revolution in Khura’in, and after many deliberations, Phoenix has finally regained the trust of the legal system of LA and instituted the Jurist System, which has now been slightly modified since the events of Apollo Justice, the biggest change being the fact that the jurors are present in the court room, like in DGS. For the first official case under the Jurist System, Phoenix is defending Ema Skye, who has been accused of murdering her older sister, Lana Skye, at the Skye Detective Agency. Ema had been working a case abroad in Khura’in, and as soon as she returned to the US, she went to visit her sister, who became a private investigator after losing faith in the justice system because of Phoenix’s disbarment and the UR-1 incident. When Ema entered the office however, she found her sister dead from an apparent poisoning. Desperate to find out who did it, she dusted the entire scene for fingerprints, not even thinking about preserving the scene. But while she was in the middle of her forensic investigation, Lana’s co-worker, Elias Coggs (Age ???) walked in on her, and contacted the police. When the officers arrived, it was discovered that Lana ingested some Atroquinine poison from her cup of tea, and since it hadn’t been manufactured in the country for two years, Ema became the prime suspect, since she just came back from Khura’in. In the defendant lobby, Phoenix and Athena are discussing the case with Ema, and she claims that her own fingerprints were found on the bottle of poison, to which Athena and Phoenix are shocked. But she rationalizes that she must have touched the bottle when she was in a state of panic while investigating the crime scene. In the middle of their discussion, Juniper Woods enters the lobby, and she explains to Athena and Phoenix that she will be the forewoman of the jury today. She is nervous, but she’s also treating this as her first official trial experience for when she becomes a judge herself. She gives Phoenix and Athena a newspaper article that is advertising the current trial, saying that she had a hunch that they’d need it. The bailiffs call for the trial to start, and Ema mutters under her breath that the “glimmerous fop” is going to make a spectacle of her sister’s murder. The trial begins, and Klavier Gavin is revealed to be the prosecutor in charge of this case. He reveals that he’d decided to take the case due to the recent shortage of prosecutors due to the Paynes and others being fired for their incompetence and corruption by Miles Edgeworth. He displays remorse over being the reason why Phoenix lost his badge seven years ago but says that he’s still fired up for a rematch. The judge introduces the 5 jurors for the trial, who are Juniper Woods (No. 1), a male reporter from the Reality News Network (No. 2), Delicia Scones (No. 3), a female computer programmer from Blue Screens Inc. (No. 4), and a young butler resembling Shelly de Killer (No. 5). The judge then admits that he hasn’t studied up on how the reformed jurist system works, and asks Phoenix if he could give him a refresher on how the trial would work, which would serve as the tutorial for the case. Klavier calls Ema to the stand as his first witness, and she reluctantly agrees to testify about what happened on that day. She has a press-all testimony, which is pretty much identical to what she told Phoenix and Athena in the lobby, but after the testimony ends, the jury goes into a panic because all of them, minus Juniper, are convinced of Ema’s guilt. Athena becomes overwhelmed from the discord from all the jurors’ hearts, and this is where the new trial gameplay mechanic, Discordant Reasoning, is introduced. This would be similar to the Panic Debate from Danganronpa V3, where you have to pick out the statement out of the 5 jurors that’s causing the discord, based on reading their emotions like in the Mood Matrix. The Mood Matrix has now been relegated to investigations because of reasons pertaining to the main prosecutor of the game, and now works similarly to Logic Chess from Investigations 2. After presenting the article that Juniper gave them to the juror that caused the discord, the reporter from the Reality News Network, Ema resumes her testimony. She assumes that her sister’s killer had recently fled the scene, since she had recently succumbed to the poison when she arrived at the crime scene, but Phoenix points out that the killer could’ve left way earlier, since Atroquinine is a slow acting poison. Ema then gets emotional, saying that she got so caught up in the moment seeing her sister dead that she couldn’t perform a proper investigation into her death. She is overcome by remorse due to the knowledge that she never would’ve been quick enough to stop her sister’s killer. She outright blames Klavier for what happened, saying that if he hadn’t accused Phoenix of forging evidence nine years ago, then Lana wouldn’t have lost faith in the court system, which wouldn’t have lead to her becoming a P.I. after getting out of prison. Klavier reassures Ema, asking her if she knows the real reason why he took the trial. It turns out, he was certain of her innocence from the beginning, and intended to use the common sense of the Jurist System to prove her innocence. He says that he understands why she might feel the way she does about him, but the show must go on, and the only way the truth will ever be reached is if the defendant tells everything that they know, even if it’s just a hunch. With newfound courage, Ema posits that there might be a clue in Lana’s files on her computer, as Lana had confided in her that she’d been performing an investigation on a high-profile case the last time they saw each other. Luckily for them, Elias Coggs had already looked through Lana’s files and emails, and was waiting in the lobby to testify. Klavier excuses Ema from the stand for the time being, and calls Elias Coggs to the stand. He appears to be a middle-aged man with a mechanical prosthetic arm, leg, and eye, giving him the appearance of a cyborg. Klavier asks Coggs to state his name and occupation, and he complies, but when probed about his past, he states that it’s classified information. He was put into the Witness Protection Program a long time ago after an incident involving his accident, and can’t disclose anything about his past that isn’t related to the case. His testimony begins, and he states that on Lana’s computer, he found that on the day of the incident, she had been exchanging emails with two different people. The first being Connie Scout (Age 29), her most recent client, and the second being Phoebe Coronus (Age 41), an old friend of hers from overseas. After probing into his testimony, he admits that the case that Lana was investigating was an international affair, and that Coronus was helping her in the investigation. He also reveals that it appears that a USB was stolen from Lana’s office, but again, he cannot reveal its contents. Suspicions are raised immediately on Coggs, but Klavier verifies that he had an alibi, as he had been at his doctor’s office all afternoon. As Coronus is still in Europe, it becomes evident that the prime suspect for the murder has to be Connie Scout, who is a computer science major at Ivy University. The judge calls for a 30 minute recess, but right before it begins, Coggs requests that Phoenix and Athena get to the bottom of Lana’s death, as the case at hand means a lot to him. During the recess, Ema apologizes for her outburst in court, and explains the case that Lana, Coronus and Coggs were investigating in more detail. Apparently, the organization they were looking into was an international spy ring that had previously mainly been involved in various acts of cyberterrorism, but she reveals that it was actually the very same organization that sent the Phantom over during the UR-1 Incident nine years ago. Athena is shocked, as she recounts how that was the same organization that killed her mother and caused the incident at the Cosmos Space Center two years ago. Ema is surprised to hear this, as Lana hadn’t informed her of the exact details of the case, and she realizes it was probably out of fear that she herself would become a target of the organization. Suddenly, Trucy Wright appears in the defendant lobby with two important pieces of evidence retrieved from Miles Edgeworth, a report of a supposed smuggling of contraband into the country and a breach of cybersecurity at the Criminal Affairs Department. Trucy questions how these pieces of evidence pertain to the case at hand, but Phoenix and Athena clearly have a suspect in mind. The bailiffs announce that the recess is over, and Trucy says that she’ll be watching the trial from the gallery. Court reconvenes, and Klavier calls Connie to the stand. She has a visor over her face and has orange dyed hair like Athena, but otherwise she has the appearance of a normal university student. She introduces herself as a foreign exchange student from Borginia, and explains that Connie Scout was the name she chose for herself when she came to study from abroad. Klavier asks her how she knew the defendant, to which she responds that she met her at a Forensics Investigation Seminar that was being held at the University a month ago, along with Ema Skye. While she was there, she was given a luminol bottle from Ema as a gift for attending it. Afterward, she asked Lana Skye to investigate a crime of her own, though she doesn’t reveal what it is. Throughout her testimony, her lies are exposed, and she becomes the prime suspect for the breach of cybersecurity at Criminal Affairs and the murder of Lana Skye. Phoenix argues that it would’ve been feasible for Scout to have been the one who had the poison smuggled into the country. But the final contradiction in the case is how Ema’s fingerprints managed to get on the bottle of Atroquinine. The thought route begins, and after deducing that she had likely been a part of the Phantom’s organization, that she was likely the one who hacked into the Criminal Affairs Department, and considering her meeting with Ema and Lana one month ago, it becomes apparent that she could’ve obtained the fingerprints off of the luminol bottle and modified the fingerprints on the bottle of poison to look like Ema’s using the information obtained from her hacking of the Criminal Affairs Department, just like how the Phantom had framed Athena at the Space Center two years prior. Connie then confesses everything. She had been a member of the Phantom’s organization, and she had been attempting to erase as many traces of her organization’s crimes that she could. Her only reason for attending the seminar one month ago was to get some info on Lana Skye, so that she could trail her and learn everything that she knew about her own organization. She arranged for a meeting to discuss a possible case for Lana to take on, but that was all a farce-what she really wanted was the USB Lana had in her possession. When she wasn’t looking, she slipped the poison into Lana’s tea, and left the scene after stealing what she needed. When probed about the USB, she says that she already passed it on to another member of the organization. With the suspect having confessed, Klavier calls Ema back to the stand. He and Ema have a conversation, and while Ema is still annoyed by his carefree attitude, she acknowledges that she would’ve been found guilty if Klavier hadn’t given her the opportunity to speak, and thanks him for his help. The judge then pronounces Ema not guilty. In the defendant lobby, Ema thanks Phoenix and Athena for defending her, and they’re soon joined by Klavier and Trucy. Ema, while thankful that the gang found her innocent, is still understandably traumatized over her sister’s death. She expresses doubts about her career choice, considering she never imagined she’d have to investigate her own sister’s body, and she’s now considering leaving her position permanently. Phoenix presents her the luminol bottle that she gave to Scout, and asks her to remember when she began to take an interest in forensics. After recounting how her sister had given her a forensics investigations book when she was young, and briefly referencing the events of Rise from the Ashes, Phoenix reminds her of all of the strides she’s made since then, and all of the times she’s helped the Wright Anything Agency solve cases in the past thanks to her impeccable forensics work. He then reminds her that he had to deal with many bumps in the road himself throughout his career as an attorney, and that he had to learn some lessons that changed his outlook on the legal system. He encourages her to follow her own path in life, but reminds her that he and Athena would greatly miss having her around to help solve cases. Ema, moved by Phoenix’s speech, thanks him for the kind words. Trucy then brings up one last thing that she still doesn’t understand about the trial, those being who Elias Coggs and Phoebe Coronus are. Ema explains that she doesn’t really know who Elias Coggs is, but she does know who Coronus is. She was Ema’s former mentor that took care of her when she first went to Europe to study, and she’s now an international forensics prosecutor. It turns out she intended to be present in the gallery for Ema’s trial, but due to a delay in her flight to LA, she couldn’t make it. Ema then theorizes that working a case with her former mentor might help reinvigorate her love for forensics. Her and Klavier have to attend to some business at the Prosecutor’s Office, and they leave together. To wrap up the case, Trucy brings up three invitations that Juniper had passed on to her for Phoenix, Athena, and herself to attend a Murder Mystery Party at the Woods Manor out in the mountains as a celebration of Juniper recently graduating from Themis Academy while also serving as a way of thanking Phoenix and Athena for defending her two years prior. Trucy declines her invitation, as she has to practice for her first international gig that she’ll be performing with Klavier and Lamiroir, but she encourages Phoenix and Athena to go. They both agree to go, and the case ends with Phoenix’s internal monologue reminiscing about all of the trials and tribulations he’s had to go through to revamp the legal system, and that he never could’ve gotten there without the help of his colleagues. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Author's notes: -I know that killing off Lana Skye might be controversial, but I felt that she made the most sense as the first victim, considering her friend from Europe, who I've named Phoebe Coronus, would make a more interesting rival for Athena, as her adherence to the scientific method and traditionalist views on the Jurist System would be a perfect foil to Athena's more psychological driven methods and her desire to revolutionize the court system along with Phoenix. It also gives Ema another character arc of doubting if her childhood dream was really her true calling in life, which I feel would be a natural progression for Ema's character, since she has a different conflict in every game that she appears in. Finally, it just gives more opportunity to expand on Athena's time studying in Europe, since Ema and Coronus could now fit into that timeline organically. Lana's role in the story wouldn't be forgotten after case 1 either, as two of the most important characters in the game have close connections to her, which would have a huge impact on the trajectory of the story as a whole, which I feel is an important aspect that the first case needs to establish. -The pun names for this case are: Elias Coggs (Alias and Cogs, which refers to his past under the Witness Protection Program as well as his cyborg like appearance.) Connie Scout (Con and Scout, because she's conning everybody into thinking she's just an ordinary university student while also being a spy for the Phantom's organization.) Phoebe Coronus (Her last name refers to her profession as a coroner. Her first and last name actually have a secret meaning as well if one of the letters from her last name is removed, but I'll leave it up to you to see if you can decipher the real meaning behind her name. -Lastly, here are the basic plotlines for the other cases of the game. These are only going to be a couple sentences each, since this post has gone on long enough already. Episode 2-Turnabout Judgment: Picking up right where we left off, Phoenix and Athena attend the Murder Mystery Party organized by Juniper's grandmother, Willow Woods, and Juniper notes that the victim in the game bears similarities to how her own grandfather died a year ago. But when one of the guests at the party winds up dead, it's Juniper's grandmother, a former judge, that ends up in the defendant's seat, and Juniper and Athena team up to acquit her of all charges against prosecutor Phoebe Coronus while Phoenix is off helping another guest at the party with a matter of their own. Loosely based on a fancase on Ace Attorney Online: A Game of Turnabout. Episode 3-The Sponsored Turnabout: During the Summer Olympics, Juniper, Athena, and Simon Blackquill all attend a game together. But when a stray firecracker causes an explosion that causes some debris to crash onto the referee for the game, a former Borginian athlete who had a grudge against the victim and is suspected to be part of the Phantom's organization ends up in the defendant's chair, and Blackquill encourages Athena and Juniper to take on the case due to a previous connection with the defendant, and the trio have to rethink their own biases against the suspect to eventually take down the true culprit of the case, the Executive of the Reality News Network who perpetuated the myth of the Dark Age of the Law after the UR-1 incident. Coronus is still the prosecutor for this case. Episode 4-Turnabout Roulette: In the filler case of the game, Trucy makes reservations at a fancy bar where she's planning on showing Phoenix part of her upcoming performance, but when the two realize that she accidentally made reservations at the Rivales Casino, and a shooting occurs in the middle of the day, Phoenix is forced into defending Brawly Rivales after his own father was murdered. Coronus is the prosecutor again in this trial, but she's noticably more lenient on Phoenix. The main focus of the case would be on the relationship between Phoenix and Trucy. Episode 5-Turnabout for Justice: A science expo is being held at the Cosmos Space Center, and the five participants in the showcase are Ema Skye, Phoebe Coronus, Elias Coggs, a C.E.O. of a famous company, who is also sponsoring the event, and surprisingly Aura Blackquill are all participating in the event. But when an accidental explosion occurs in the middle of the event, everyone is evacuated from the scene with two notable exceptions: Phoebe Coronus and Aura Blackquill. After the fire dies down a bit, some officers go in to investigate the scene, and are surprised to find Aura Blackquill leaning over the victim, Phoebe Coronus's body. Aura Blackquill is named the prime suspect for the case, and it's up to Athena and Blackquill to find her innocence, as Phoenix and Trucy don't want anything to do with her after the kidnapping incident two years ago, and Juniper is rooting for her guilt as well, since she remembers how she used to hate Athena all those years ago. Willow Woods would be the judge for this trial, and Miles Edgeworth calls in prosecutor Franziska von Karma to head the case. Episode Special-Turnabout Reconciliation: It's been one year since Garan has been dethroned, and Khura'in is hosting an international arts festival as an act of goodwill to its new allies. Trucy, Klavier, and Lamiroir are all participating in their own act in the show, and Ema was invited by Prosecutor Nahyuta Sahdmadhi as well. But when a murder happens in the middle of the show, Lamiroir is under suspicion of murder, and Apollo and Trucy finally learn their familial secret. Prosecutor Sahdmadhi is the prosecutor for the case, and Rayfa and Amara make some cameo appearances as well. Sorry for the long post lol. Tell me what you think of these ideas in the comments.
