“Gambling is inevitable.” So began the introduction to the final report of the Commission on the Review of National Policy Toward Gambling. “No matter what is said or done by advocates or opponents of gambling in all its various forms, it is an activity which is practiced, or endorsed, by a substantial majority of Americans.” The church has spoken out very little and done virtually nothing in opposition to the presence and influence of gambling. Government, especially on the state level, is an advocate for gambling, and the church needs to take a stand, expose the evils of gambling, and declare how it's really at odds with the principles of Scripture. Gambling - Is it a sin? The subject of gambling is multi-faceted and something that can divide Christians. On one side of the fence, there are those who argue that it is only a game and, like anything else (eating, drinking, etc.), it is acceptable as long as it does not become controlling or addicting. So what does the Bible say about gambling? It all depends upon your perspective and interpretation. The Bible doesn't directly address gambling and such silence provides the fertile ground for Gambling by children and young people can be particularly damaging. Their relationships and mental health can be affected while they are young, but also for life. Most commercial gambling is illegal for under 18s in the UK, though they currently still have access to some slot machines and to the gambling-like activities of online gaming. Money is given to us by God to be used for good, not evil. There are Christians who do not see any harm in gambling if they make a budget beforehand. This view proposes that as long as one does not compromise on life essentials, then one is free to gamble. There are no sections in the holy book that condone the behaviors of what gambling can bring out in people, or that of the risks tied into such activities which ultimately lead to one of several destructive paths or tendencies i.e. addiction, debt, theft, fraud Gambling is a difficult issue because if it is done in moderation and only on occasion, it is a waste of money, but it is not necessarily evil. People waste money on all sorts of activities. Gambling is no more or less of a waste of money than seeing a movie (in many cases), eating an unnecessarily expensive meal, or purchasing a worthless item.
